About the program
The innovative Master’s Program “Identity, Education and Competences for Democratic Culture” offered by the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and the European Wergeland Centre is a 100% distance learning, 12-month program. It aims at promoting democratic principles across all educational levels and processes in various settings by training educators from diverse backgrounds and scientific fields in Competences for Democratic Culture and their applications in formal, informal, and non-formal education.

The Curriculum
This international MA Program is organised by three NKUA departments (Theology, Educational Studies and Philology) and the EWC (Council of Europe and Norwegian Government). It offers a comprehensive education through its English-speaking curriculum, covering theoretical, scientific, and practical aspects. The program includes three specialisations, awarding a total of 75 ECTS:
- Religion, Education and Competences for Democratic Culture
- Language, History and Literature in Education and Competences for Democratic Culture
- Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC) and Human Rights Education (HRE) and Competences for Democratic Culture
The program adopts a student-centered approach, aiming to provide students with the tools to adapt and teach in a rapidly evolving world. Its curriculum includes courses on Artificial Intelligence, Social Cohesion, the Holocaust, Hate Speech, Arts in Education, Teaching Controversial Issues, LGBTQ rights, Religions and Democracy, Human Rights etc. Additionally, there is an optional Internship/Summer School in Greece, offering hands-on experience and an additional 15 ECTS (totaling 90 ECTS).
